Identify the terminal before planning the route

Delhi Airport's official terminal guide separates Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 as domestic terminals and Terminal 3 as a combined international and domestic terminal. That distinction matters more than the airline name alone. A carrier can operate from more than one terminal, and the airport provides a flight-based terminal finder for the current assignment.

Make the terminal number the first line of your arrival note. Add the flight number and date, then check them again when online check-in opens. If somebody is meeting you, send the terminal as well as the flight number. This is an editorial planning method; the authoritative assignment remains the airline itinerary and the airport's current flight information.

Decide whether you are arriving or connecting

A city arrival ends after the relevant immigration, baggage and customs steps for that journey. A connecting passenger instead needs to follow the transfer path for the next flight. Delhi Airport tells transfer passengers to check the itinerary, boarding pass and baggage tag, and it notes that international transfers involve immigration and security procedures appropriate to the route.

Do not assume checked baggage will move automatically. Through-checking depends on the airline arrangement and booking, and the airport explicitly advises passengers to confirm at check-in. If the flights are on separate tickets, plan for the possibility of collecting bags, leaving the controlled area, checking in again and repeating security or immigration. The airline, not a general guide, must confirm the final process.

Match the metro line to the terminal

The airport's official metro page connects Terminal 3 directly with the Airport Express corridor to central New Delhi and onward toward Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25. It describes Terminal 2 as a short transfer from the Terminal 3 metro area. Terminal 1 is served by the Magenta Line, so an Airport Express plan copied from a Terminal 3 journey does not automatically fit a Terminal 1 arrival.

Use rail when its station, operating window and your final destination make it the clear choice. Look up the current line map and first or last service on the official airport and Delhi Metro channels before committing, especially for an early or late flight. This guide deliberately omits a fixed fare or journey time because both can change and because the final trip depends on interchange and destination.

• T3: start by checking Airport Express service.
• T2: follow the current airport directions to the T3 metro area.
• T1: start by checking the Magenta Line.
• For every terminal, verify the last-mile route from the destination station.

Use the correct road-transport pickup zone

Delhi Airport lists cab and taxi services by terminal rather than presenting one universal curb. Its current page places pickup for Terminals 1 and 2 outside arrivals and directs Terminal 3 users to the ground level of the multi-level car park. Service brands and counters vary by terminal, which is why a driver instruction that says only Delhi Airport is incomplete.

After baggage claim, use official signs and the airport's listed counters or app-pickup directions. Confirm the vehicle registration and booking details in the service you chose before boarding. This is a basic transaction check, not a claim that any private provider is safer or better. Treat a terminal change as a separate journey

The airport publishes an inter-terminal route selector and currently describes free shuttle links on specified terminal routes. It also lists walking, buggy, shuttle and cab choices between Terminals 2 and 3. These are not interchangeable in every circumstance: baggage, mobility, queueing, road conditions and the exact arrival and departure points affect what is practical.

Build a connection plan around the airline's minimum requirements, then add a margin for leaving one terminal and completing the next terminal's formalities. Never use a generic city travel-time estimate as a guaranteed terminal-change time. If the connection is protected on one booking, ask the airline where to report. If it is self-arranged, accept that the operational risk belongs to the traveller.

Plan conservatively for separate tickets

Delhi Airport's transit guidance distinguishes baggage arrangements that are confirmed through the airline from journeys where the passenger must collect and recheck bags. Separate tickets are the situation in which assumptions are most costly: the onward airline may have no obligation to protect a missed flight, and the passenger may need to meet a new check-in cutoff after completing arrival procedures.

An editorially conservative plan is to map every step on paper: arrival formalities, baggage collection if required, terminal transfer if required, onward check-in, security and any immigration step. Build one useful arrival note

A useful note contains only details you can act on: terminal, destination address, chosen rail station or road pickup point, a backup option, and the official pages to recheck. Save the address in text as well as in a map pin so it can be shown to staff or a driver. If using metro, include the line and any interchange; if using a cab, include the terminal-specific pickup instruction.

Do not fill the note with copied prices or service times days in advance. Instead, add a final-check reminder for the departure day. This approach keeps stable facts, such as which rail corridor serves a terminal, separate from operational facts, such as a current service window or counter location.

Run a five-minute day-of-travel check

Open the flight or terminal finder, the relevant metro or taxi page, and the inter-terminal page if the itinerary connects. Confirm the terminal one last time with the airline. Check whether the metro still covers the required operating window or whether the road pickup instructions have changed. For a connection, confirm the baggage tag destination at the first check-in desk.
