Delhi Metro 2026: The Complete Tourist's Guide to Getting Around
Delhi Metro is South Asia's most comprehensive urban rail network — 286 stations across 9 lines covering every major tourist destination. This guide tells you which line to take, how to buy tickets, and how to avoid the common mistakes.
Delhi Metro is, without question, the most useful thing that has happened to tourism in Delhi. Before it opened in 2002, navigating a city of 20 million people in traffic that moved at an average of 12km/h was an exercise in sustained frustration. Today, the metro connects every major tourist destination — Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, Red Fort, Connaught Place, Old Delhi — quickly, cheaply, and in air-conditioned comfort. For visitors, understanding how to use it efficiently transforms the city from overwhelming to navigable.
The Lines That Matter for Tourists
Yellow Line (Line 2): The tourist backbone — runs from HUDA City Centre in the south to Samaypur Badli in the north, passing through Qutub Minar, AIIMS, Central Secretariat (for India Gate area), Rajiv Chowk (Connaught Place), New Delhi Railway Station, Chandni Chowk (Old Delhi). This single line covers more tourist attractions than any other.
Blue Line (Line 3/4): Runs east-west from Dwarka to Noida/Vaishali, with key tourist stops at Dwarka Sector 21, Janakpuri, Rajouri Garden, Kirti Nagar, Rajiv Chowk (interchange with Yellow Line), Mandi House (for Pragati Maidan/ITO area), and Yamuna Bank.
Violet Line (Line 6): Connects Central Secretariat south to Faridabad — passes through Khan Market (upscale shopping and dining), Jangpura, and Lajpat Nagar (shopping).
Airport Express Line: A dedicated high-frequency service between Terminal 3 (IGI Airport) and New Delhi Railway Station, with stops at Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan, and Dwarka. Journey time T3 to New Delhi: 20 minutes. Fare: INR 60. Trains every 10–15 minutes, 5am to midnight.
How to Buy Tickets
Token (single journey): Available from token vending machines at every station. Touch-screen interface in Hindi and English. Process: select destination → select number of passengers → pay in cash (no cards at many machines). Tokens are round plastic chips; tap on entry, deposit in exit gate slot.
Tourist Card: A smart card available at airport metro stations and major interchange stations. One-day (INR 200 including INR 50 security deposit) or three-day (INR 500 including deposit). Unlimited travel on the entire network. For visitors spending more than a day in Delhi, this is the right choice — queues at token machines during peak hours can be 10–15 minutes.
Delhi Metro Smart Card (regular): A reloadable card for regular commuters — available at any station with a minimum INR 200 load. Gives a 10% discount per journey. Useful if you plan to be in Delhi for a week or more.

Metro Etiquette and Practical Tips
- Reserved coaches: The first coach of every train is reserved for women. Separate women-only coaches are marked — men found in these coaches can be fined.
- Security checks: Every station has airport-style security — bag X-ray and body scan. Budget an extra 3–5 minutes for station entry.
- Peak hours: 8–10am and 5–8pm are extremely crowded. If you're sightseeing, travel between 10am and 4pm when carriages are comfortable.
- Prohibited items: Selfie sticks are not allowed inside metro stations. Neither are large bags over specific dimensions (40×30×15cm).
- Last trains: Metro service ends approximately 11pm–11:30pm depending on line and direction. Check DMRC app for exact times.
- App: Download the official DMRC app or use Google Maps with transit directions — both give real-time route planning and fare estimates.
